Salutations, traveler of The Internets! Welcome to William's Bloody Hell, so named after our founder, Sir Bloody William.
He is seen in the likeness above in a rare, 19th century woodcut. This
image was rumoured to have been
commissioned after a bout of unpleasantness
in the White Chapel district of London. Do enjoy your stay and peruse our many, varied offerings, much of which cannot be found elsewhere!
Review by: Unheard Reviews
The following review was completed on June 28, 2004 and is for Version 3: Silent Horror.
First Impression/Splash
Looks pretty good. You don't need to scrollbar, though. So just add a
scroll=no in the BODY tag. So, let's look at the requirements. You don't
need '24-bit RGB color' because everyone has that. For the resolution you can
just say 800x600 resolution or higher. And you'll also need the requirement of
'Internet Explorer', because I can't view the site in Mozilla Firefox. The
splash images is fine, too, though somewhat plain. Entering now....
Layout/Design
Well, it definitely got better than last time-graphic-wise. still, though, it's
kind of plain. Instead of having just a dark grey background, you could put in
some kind of pattern i.e. thin stripes, diagonal lines, grids, dots, just
something really simple, so it doesn't look so empty. The navigation starts at
one spot and then finished on a second line. If you just moved it all over about
90 or 100 pixels it looks like it should all fit in one line. In the 'Linky!'
section, you should slow down the marquee a little and also fade out the image
because it makes me a little dizzy and it also take the attention away from the
main content. Other than that, I see no other problem with your layout.
Content
On your updates page, you might want to add a short welcoming paragraph.
All you really have to say is something like 'Welcome to William's Bloody Hell!
Navigation is right above, so feel feel to browse through the content and leave
a comment, if you please. Updates are below....blah blah blah' just something
simple like that.
In Art, for the thumbnails again, it would look a lot neater if they all had the same height. What you've done is used the same width, but that would only look neat in you had a line break between each thumbnails. It doesn't matter what the width is, just make sure that the height is the same, somewhere between 50-100 pixels is a good size to have. In the text index of the art, I'm wondering why you have it open up into the iFrame and then need to click the picture to open up in a new window with an explanation. I think that it would be better if you got rid of the pages with only the art on it and no explanation. Did that make sense? I hope so. On the pages with the explanations you should also add the title that you gave it in the text index. In the Inuyasha explanation page, you should change 'cartoon' to 'anime', because anime isn't really a cartoon. And maybe I'm just being anal about that because I'm tired of people saying 'anime sucks because it's a cartoon', so nyah. For the art that wasn't by you, you should say something about it (only if you have something to say, though). Oh, and also who drew it and any contact info they gave you.
In Reviews, you should consider saying which ones are newer. You can just put a simple bolded "new!" and leave it up for like...a month or something like that. Also, since you alphabetized all the individual reviews, you should alphabetize the main review index. Overall, I really see no problem with your reviews. They're better than the ones I've seen at other sites.
About your Rants, I don't think you could really call then rants, since you're not ranting about anything. They're really more like articles, or editorials, and some can be classified as blogs. You probably shouldn't even titled them as Rant #. You have a title for them, so you can just link the title instead and put the date after that.
In Misc. -> Site of the Month, you should give reasons why you picked that site over the other sites that submitted. What made them better than the other ones? What did you like the most? What did you like the least? etc. In Short Stories, you have an 'Email Him' link after one, but not the other. Just for consistency, put another 'Email Him' link after the first one. In all the quiz crib sheet, you should put the question before your answer, because people are forgetful and can't always remember the questions asked. In the Geek Quiz score me sheet, you said 21-26 points, when there were only 25 questions. In the 100 word challenge, Lyns's entry is in a difference font than the rest of the page. How you did it, I have no idea, so I can't help you there. Most of the time, just recoding it by hand does the trick. You also have a lot of extra line breaks at the end of the page that you should take out. In Awards For My Site, you have two things. awards for your site and awards for your blends. Those should be separated into two different pages. Okay, this is somewhat off-topic, but in for my How Evil are you Quiz? you should go back and retake it because I made new quiz plaques and (in my opinion) look a lot better now. In the Layout Graveyard, the screenshots are rather large. So big that they give the page a horizontal scrollbar. So you can either make them smaller and leave it at that or make them smaller and link the thumbnail to a larger sized screenshot.
In Submitting, you talk a lot
about some details and things like that, but you never really said where to
submit to or anything like that. All you have to do is add a quick sentence at
the end that says something like, "Email me at [email here] and the submit as
[subject]", of course replacing everything in brackets
You have a lot of links. So many that you should probably split it up into a
couple of pages or have anchors or the like. Also, you have line breaks between
each link, but you don't need that. Only between each different section do you
need a link break
I wonder what you did with your 'About Me' page. Is the only way to get to is
from the death test link? Or did you hide it somewhere else that I can't find
anymore? ^^ Anyway, if you're not too freaked about giving info about yourself
anymore, you should move it up to the main navigation.
Organization
You have no big problem with organization at all. 'Fine Print' and 'Links' can
go under Misc. a few places need to be alphabetized (review index, and misc.),
but that's pretty much it. Oh, also the all the links Linky, should also put put
in the 'links' section. I'm not saying that you should move it, just put another
copy of it in 'Links'
Errors
On the index/splash page, the 'vote for me' link needs to open up in a new
window. In the many of your art explanation pages, you're missing commas in
introductory phrases and in compound sentences. Sometimes you also forget to
capitalize the beginning of sentences. You hyphenate a lot of words that you
don't need to. Like in SOTM Application, webmaster is one word. In Submitting,
it's 'fan fiction'. In Links, The Sisterhood has moved
here.
Overall
I have a good overall impression. You got a lot more good content and I can see
that you improved on other web design skills. Like the last time, you really
only need to work on your graphic skills and maybe learning some new html tags.
So, you use Photoshop 7. The best thing to improve in graphic art is to just sit
down and play around with an image and try out various filters/effects. Use
multiple layers with different blend modes and once you experiment long enough,
you'll find a style that you really like or some new techniques. Good luck.
