:: True Blood season 2 ::

by William the Bloody

When we last left the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana: The serial killer has been found out and killed, so when one more dead body dangles out of Detective Bellefleur's car, everyone knows the trouble isn't over, especially considering how the heart was ripped right out.  Bill had been gone for weeks in order to answer to vampire law enforcement over the death of a vampire, and in order to atone for this, Bill is forced to turn a kidnapped girl into a vampire against her (and his) will. Sookie isn't very pleased when Bill finally returns home with a pretty young girl in tow, but realizes she had a part in her making. Sookie's friend Tara is still hanging out with Maryann, a mysterious older woman who appears to be full of good intentions but whose real nature is a mystery to everyone but Sam Merlotte. Sookie's brother Jason is distraught over the murder of his girlfriend and turns to religion for help, but due to the Fellowship of the Sun's strong anti-vampire stance, he keeps this news from his sister. When vampire sheriff Eric Northman asks for Sookie's help in tracking down the abductors of a two thousand year old vampire from Dallas, she agrees on her own terms under Bill's strong protests. It isn't long before Jason's new anti-vampire church and Sookie's kidnapping mission appear to be on a collision course. But with Sookie and Bill out of Bon Temps, will there be anyone left to stop the killer from ripping out hearts?

The Good: This season did a great job of expanding on its universe. Another shape shifter and telepath are introduced, so we know that Sam and Sookie aren't the only ones with their respective abilities. Maryann is another type of supernatural creature all together, which opens the door wide for who-knows-what down the line. Jason Stackhouse's character got really well explored this season (that loveable idiot) and you just know there's more good stuff for him in store. The burgeoning relationship between Bill's young vampire ward Jessica and Hoyt Fortenberry was totally sweet that it made me feel good inside. I like Hoyt and was pleased to see him brought to the forefront for a while. We get some nice glimpses into Bill and Eric's respective pasts. Oh and Anna Paquin shows her boobs. Repeatedly. It's uh... it's pretty nice for her to do that for us.

The Bad: The ongoing plot thread of the heart-ripping killer and the town-wide supernatural possession take the whole "we're on HBO!" aspect of the show really far. We're talking large, nude orgies here. Now, I'm not opposed to nudity or sexuality, but large grunting orgies just make me lose a bit of interest (also may make some viewers uncomfortable). There were a few moments that it seemed to me like people completed skipped over some logical things to say or actions and that didn't make sense to me.

Overall, I'm still digging this series. Even though vampires have been accepted into society, they still are threatening and scary (which is what vampires should be). The crazy anti-vampire church stuff seemed like a natural reaction some people would indeed have to vampires, so that felt right, too. But I just love most of the main characters: Sookie, Bill, Jason, Tara, Sam and are wonderful folks and the supporting cast (Hoyt, Detective Bellefleur, Arlene, Eric Northman, etc) just make it stronger. It's a strong supernatural drama, which is something I like, and the fact that it has vampire main characters makes me like it more. the fact that it still maintains the same level of quality and mood over the second season has bolstered my interest. I will definitely be watching season 3.
