:: Megamind ::

by William the Bloody

A distant solar system is collapsing, and a couple jettison their baby into space hoping to save it... thus is the origin of BOTH supervillan Megamind, blessed with super intelligence, AND his arch rival superHERO, Metroman, blessed with superpowers from a neighbouring planet in the same system. Growing up in the same community in Metrocity, Metroman fit in well as a child, impressing others with his physical powers, but Megamind was relegated to loser status when his inventions, while impressive, often backfired. It was then that Megamind decided that if he was going to be treated bad, then he would BE bad; the BADDEST baddie anyone had ever seen. So, a Metroman-Megamind rivalry raged on for decades: Megamind would kidnap reporter Roxanne Ritchie and Metroman would rescue her, over and over ad infinitum. Then the day of the Metroman Museum dedication, Megamind does his usual kidnapping of Roxanne and lures Metroman into trap, just like always, but this time.... Metroman is reduced to nothing more than a charred skeleton. The unthinkable has finally happened: Megamind has won. Sure the tyrannical overthrow of local authority and pillaging are fun... for a while. But what's a supervillain without a superhero to fight?

 The Good: My only expectation for this film going in was hoping that it would be funny, and it was. Oh yes. There is this one bit of banter between Metroman and Megamind where they are spitting allegories at each other and it cracked me right the hell up. There was some nice voice casting to pull the lines off, too. Now, I don't care if you have a celebrity voice cast or not, so long as they do it well, and I got to hand it to Will Ferrell as Megamind and Tina Fey as Roxanne. Will Ferrell was the PERFECT guy to read some of the jokes, especially the running gag of Megamind's mispronunciations; I couldn't picture anyone else pulling those off so well. Oh and I mustn't forget Jonah Hill's character! He was definitely the right choice for that part! Let's not ignore Megamind's kickin' tunes: "Back in Black," "Crazy Train," "Welcome to the Jungle".... good stuffs!

The Bad: Brad Pitt's voicing of Metroman, well, I'm not sure how I felt about it. It wasn't nearly as good as the aforementioned celebrity performances, but it wasn't necessarily terrible. It seemed, as the film went on, that most of the best jokes are at the beginning. After Metroman's defeat and Megamind takes over the city, there is a definite decline in good comedy; a few break through laughs here and there, but not the saturation of the first act.

Overall, it was a super fun film and I'm glad I went to go see it. Some of it may be too dark for the little kiddies (re: Metroman's charred skeleton) but perfectly enjoyable for everyone else, with some good, hearty laughs.
