Dancing in the Dark. And now for something completely different! It you read Rant 367, then you know about my fabulous vacation and the fact that I got to see the fabled goth-dance band The Cruxshadows perform. Something that I found interesting about them is that they dress in a very, er, "character design friendly" way. I don't know how else to put it except to say that they look like they walked right out of a comic book or something. It's probably because of this that I was struck with an urge to want to draw some of them and NOT, oh, the people in the band Covenant, for example, who, while a fantastic band, are just three Swedish guys in suits. Anyway, pictured here are the two back up singers/dancers Jessica and Jenne. Their performance costumes vary, but look similar to this. I actually designed these outfits based on what they have been known to wear in the past. They usually have on some sort of tank top, either short pants or skirts, and the furry leg warmer things, which is usually mostly black with a light colour accent that glows under black light to enhance the visual appeal of their dancing. I had a difficult time colouring their furry leg warmer things and I'm still not entirely happy with the end result. They looked okay on a white backdrop, but once I made it black.... eeeehhh, I dunno. And yes, I will admit to "cheating" on this one. If you saw the work in progress sketch version, then you noticed there was only ONE FIGURE. I was worried about time constraints and also my ability to draw two figures in practically perfect mirror image of each other, so I finished ONE figure, duplicated it, and flipped it over. If I had drawn them each, the end result would have been terribly asymmetrical, you can bet on it. Yes, I am bad. And lazy. Mostly lazy, really. I did make minor changes to them with the hopes of individualizing them a bit. I tried pathetically to try to make the pink parts of their costumes have a little glow to them, so I hope that is noticeable, maybe? Oh and their hair is my horribly misguided attempt to draw those goth-dreads these ladies have been known to have. I know: FAIL. Oh well.
