Agents of the Endtimes guest comic. When Jimmy Misanthrope, creator of Agents of the Endtimes, decided to take a month off from his comic to catch up on other projects, he mentioned to me on the Twitter that he wouldn't mind if I wanted to send in a guest strip. At first I baulked. There was NO WAY I could come up with something cool enough to maintain the aweseomness AotE has as its baseline. NO WAY. Then I got to thinking about how I really do like AotE, the characters and all (heck, you can tell that just by the fan art I've drawn), and it might even be fun. The problem was, I wanted to do a comic strip for him loads better than I do comics strips for myself. I mean, if I'm doing something for me, I only have myself to disappoint; if I'm drawing for someone ELSE, I work much harder to make sure they're pleased. So you'll notice that every panel has original art in it, whereas my own strips reuse drawings like nobody's business. I was reminded of why I do that when I made this. Boy howdy did retouching these inks take ages! I meticulously went over every drawn line of this thing zoomed in practically to the point of pixels. After I got that unpleasantness done, it was pretty smooth sailing. Laying it out was really fun. I had never done the silhouetted figure bit in a strip before and I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm also happy with the extreme-close-up panels and the word balloon layout. The punch line for this comic is in direct reference to the events depicted in Issue 1, page 3, where we are first introduced to Starla's superior gaming abilities. The colour scheme of the living room can be seen in the Halloween Special, page 1 and the crazy hallway wall paper is on page 2 of the same special. With the exception of the last panel, the entire strip can be viewed as an exercise in avoiding drawing actual backgrounds. Thanks for saving my ass, anime-style action lines!
